My Legs Will Never be the Same Again

Yesterday morning, my training partner Jamo and I decided to go down to daisy hill for an intense workout. Jamo’s all pumped up because he’s applying to get into the airforce next week! 

So what does any ego-driven pumped up male do when trying to get into the airforce? Why, download the SAS training schedule!!

 
If you don’t know who the Australian SAS special forces are, look them up. They are the “best of the best” in the Australian defence force and rumoured to be one of the best tactical forces in the world!


Anyway, Jamo’s pumped up because it’s meant to be this really hard, intense workout! Because we’re feeling pretty “gung ho", we decide to do not one round of the totally INSANE program but 5! I’m getting married in 3 weeks so hey, can’t hurt right? 

The program looked like this (Remember we did this 5 TIMES): 

- 1 minute high intesity high knees holding a 10kg bar above our head
- 10 push ups
- 10m crocodile walk (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UpBqDvYKBz8)
- 10 Push Ups
- 100m x95kg Fireman Carry (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K6LfAPETf3M)
- 100m Sprint with 10kg bar (Holding it like a gun)

After the first round, we knew we were in for a cracker! By the end of round 3, both of us were about to spew. At that point Jamo says to me “let’s just do 4”. 

Now at this point, I feel like puking, my legs feel like Olive’s arms out of the old cartoon Popeye (really wobbley) and I’m sweating like crazy because we are fully kitted up in our SAS army uniforms (Yes, I do wear other clothes apart from my Ripple Fitness training uniform). 

It would have been so easy for me to say yes at that point. And it happens all the time for people. They start out all optimistic (talking up a big game) but when the fatigue and pain starts to kick in, it all becomes a little too hard and they start looking to cut corners. 

9 reps instead of 10, 350m instead of 400m, 4 rounds instead of 5. You see what happens is people start to think about how much work they still have to do! 

And when you’re tired, fatigued and stuffed, your mind starts coming up with all kinds of excuses, just like mine did:

"I better not do too many fireman walks, Jamo's 95kg and it’s bad for my back”
“Spewing up can’t be good, I better back it off”
“I’m really hot and I don’t want to get heat stroke”

I learnt a very long time ago that my mind will try and play tricks on me when I’m tired so I’ve built up that other little voice inside my head that says: 

“How bad do you want it?”
“If you cut corners here, you’ll corners in all areas of your life” 
“Don’t think about it, just do it”

A little quote my pop used to tell me when I was younger - ‘When the going gets tough, the tough get going’. 


I turned to Jamo, and say “no way man, we said we’re going to do 5 and that’s what were going to do” . Jamo responds with "I just have no energy left”. I reply "you always have something left in the tank, mind over matter my friend, mind over matter". 

Jamo smashed the last set and so did I. 

Stop thinking about things for so long! It’s called paralysis by analysis - just get in and do it! Take it one step at a time and stop giving up and cutting corners. 

How you do 1 thing is how you do everything!
